Year's Best Science Fiction

Lavender Mist
My short story "Strong Medicine" is going to appear in the next annual edition of The Year's Best Science Fiction*, edited by Gardner Dozois and published by St. Martin's Press. The book comes out in July.

I'm speechless.

But not so speechless that I can't remind you that you don't need to wait for the book to read the story (although I hope you'll still pick up the book). It's still available for free perusal at Salon, with the viewing of a short ad.

Damn. Wow.

* NOTE: The link above is to the 20th edition of YBSF, containing stories from 2002.

Thank you!

I'm particularly pleased with this because this is a story I first wrote back in '94 or '95. I sent it to Gardner just after I moved to Seattle in '95, and he asked me for a rewrite. I did the rewrite, but apparently didn't quite address his concerns because he passed on the story the second time too.

So I pulled it out of the drawer last fall, brought it up to date (still with Gardner's original concerns in mind), and immediately sold it to Salon. I figured I would never know whether or not the third draft would have worked for Gardner. But now I do know, and that makes me even more happy with story than I was before.
