Mystery bird
For those of you who were chiming in the other day about the new waterbirds that have recently appeared on the lagoon at our local park, Ella and I took some pictures yesterday. The photos aren't great, but can you identify this bird?

We call them "mud hens" here too. It's an American Coot. Officially, it's part of the Raillidae family, which includes Rails, Gallinules, and Coots. Keep your eye out for chicks -- they are unbelievably cute little black and red bobbers.

Yes, the 11-year-old birder in our house also says it's an American coot. Me, I knew it was a coot, but he's much better at that sort of thing. Kid's already started a life list.

Definitely an American Coot.
