Midnight near the oasis  
On our upcoming Egyptian vacation, we take an overnight train to Aswan. We splurged on a sleeper car, because how cool is it to ride a sleeper car in North Africa? And we plan to join the Eight Feet High Club.

One of the loveliest places on the planet. Er, 27 years or so ago.

I'm afraid Alexandria is not on the itinerary. We were sad about that, but it came down to choosing between that or a side trip to Petra in Jordan. We chose Petra.

We splurged on a sleeper car

Sound like a neat idea to me! I love traveling by train. Be sure to blog about how they are in Egypt. Mexico used to have some nice trains but I haven't ridden on a train in Mexico in decades and I've heard they've gone downhill.

Jo and I are greatly amused by the Eight Feet High Club idea. And some advice for you: don't drink from anything other than the wooden cup when you're at Petra.

I took a sleeper in Morocco and while it was a memorable experience, I wouldn't necessarily recommend the "Eight Feet High" club. It will just give the fleas more real estate to forage.

Originally we were supposed to do Morocco on this trip, but the conference Laura is attending got moved from Marrakech to Malta at the last minute. I was very excited for Morocco based on that Atlantic article of yours, but this should be a nice substitute.
